Air fryer hash browns are perfectly crispy on the outside, light in the middle, super tasty, and ready in no time. A delicious breakfast essential.
So, to start with, this isn’t a homemade hash browns recipe.
You can make your own hash brown patties or shredded hash browns and cook them in an air fryer. But I’m a big fan of supermarket frozen hash browns. They taste great, they are easy to keep in for when you need them, and they are super cheap.

Why Air Fry Frozen Hash Browns?
If you’ve always cooked frozen hash browns in the oven, you might wonder why you should change to cooking them in an air fryer. Few people add oil to frozen hash browns, so they aren’t healthier. Why bother?
- If you usually fry your hash browns in cooking oil, this is a healthier option.
- They cook a little faster than in the oven.
- Air frying gives you fantastically golden brown and crispy hash browns. They are much better than oven-baked frozen hash browns.
- Cooking your hash browns in the air fryer can free up space and making cooking a big breakfast easier.
- Using either a large air fryer basket or a wire shelf, you can air fry hash browns simultaneously as sausages, bacon or eggs, saving energy and time.
- I’m obsessed with hash browns—nothing like potatoes that you can have for breakfast. Air frying means I can have them all of the time.

Choosing the Right Hash Browns
Ideally, you want your hash browns to be even in size and shape so they cook evenly.
You should also make sure they are sealed tightly in the freezer, so there’s no freezer burn or ice crystals on them.
Apart from that, while you can use fancy hash browns if you want, I use cheap Aldi-own ones, which are gorgeous! I’m not a food snob.
If you use different hash browns, remember that if they are a different shape to mine (like those yummy long, thin ones from McDonald’s!), they won’t need cooking for as long, so check them a few minutes earlier.
Or you might need to cook frozen hash browns for a little longer if they are thicker or you have more in the basket.

How to Make Air Fryer Hash Browns
Pre-Heating the Air Fryer
Preheat your air fryer to 200 degrees C. This means that your air-fryer hash browns start cooking straight away, helping the outsides to crips.
Cook Your Hash Browns
Place the frozen hash browns in a single layer on the crisper tray of your air fryer basket and cook for 10-12 minutes, flipping carefully with silicone tongs at 6 minutes.
I recommend breaking one hash brown in half to make sure the middle is piping hot. If not, reduce to 180 degrees C and cook for a further five minutes until they are piping hot all the way through.
Serve your hash browns straight out of the air fryer, removing carefully with silicone tongs.

What to Serve with Air Fryer Frozen Hash Browns
To create a well-rounded breakfast, consider serving your air fryer hash browns with:
- Scrambled Eggs
- Baked Beans
- Sausages
- Bacon
- Mushrooms
- Tomatoes
- Toast
- Ketchup or brown sauce.
A combination of the above is perfect!

Can You Cook Hash Browns and Eggs at the Same Time?
Yes! Whatever you are serving hash browns with, you can make an air fryer breakfast if you have room in your basket, a separate shelf, or two drawers in your air fryer oven.
I often make air fryer hash browns and eggs at the same time.

Seasoning and Oil Tips
I don’t season or oil my hash browns at all. I just put them in and air fry them as they are. But if you want a little extra, there are some options.
A light oil coating can be applied to the hash browns for a crispier finish. Options include:
- Olive oil
- Canola oil
- Sunflower oil
For seasoning, consider the following simple yet tasty options:
- Salt
- Black pepper
- Paprika
- Garlic powder
Each seasoning should be sprinkled evenly over the hash browns to enhance their flavour without overpowering the natural potato taste.
