I absolutely love fish pie. It’s one of those things that I don’t make anywhere near often enough.

This air fryer fish pie recipe is super simple, always delicious, and perfect if you, for any reason, don’t have access to an oven to cook a more traditional fish pie.

For some of my air fryer recipes, like my pasta bake or chilli, I try to do as much as possible in the air fryer itself to minimise washing up and cooking costs.

Other air fryer recipes, like my cottage pie, I think still need to be simmered together on the hob to get the flavour and texture right, so I just bake them in the air fryer, using it in place of the oven.

This air fryer fish pie recipe is in that category.

I think making a white sauce for the fish in the air fryer would be madness! So, I still prepare everything on the hob before assembling it in a silicone air fryer basket to bake.

Why I Love Air Fryer Fish Pie

I love this recipe for air fryer fish pie because:

  • It’s easy.
  • You can use different fish if you prefer.
  • It’s a great way to eat more fish.
  • I love making a white sauce. It feels like real cooking, if you know what I mean.

Ingredients For Air Fryer Fish Pie

When I make my fish pie in the air fryer, I use:

Potatoes – For the mashed potato topping. Something that mashes well, like Maris Pipers, is best.

Salt and Pepper – For the mash and filling.

Butter – For the mash and the white sauce.

Milk – For the mash and the white sauce.

Flour

Dill

Spring Onions

Fish Pie Mix – I use a pack with smoked haddock, salmon and cod.

Prawns – These can be cooked or uncooked as long as they are peeled and prepared. I use cooked frozen prawns, taking them out to thaw the night before. I use large prawns, but king are great if you want something more substantial.

Frozen Peas

Dijon Mustard

Eggs

Grated Cheddar Cheese

You’ll Also Need

To make this easy air fryer fish pie, you’ll need an air fryer. It doesn’t have to be a fancy ninja!

You’ll also need:

  • Three flameproof pans. One for the eggs, one for the mash, and one for the fish pie filling.
  • Potato peeler.
  • A sharp knife and chopping board.
  • A baking dish that fits comfortably in your air fryer. I use these silicone baskets. (Affiliate Link) They have relatively long handles and a firm base, so you can move them easily without spilling anything. You can also use a casserole dish that fits. If your air fryer is much smaller than mine or has two smaller air fryer baskets, I recommend halving this recipe or air frying in two batches.
  • Food thermometer. I highly recommend a cheap probe like this one (Affiliate Link) for air fryer cooking, as a lot of package instructions only give cooking instructions for the oven. I use this resource as a safe temperature guide.
  • Cheesegrater.

Step Nineteen

Reduce the temperature to 160 degrees C and bake for a further 20 minutes.

Check occasionally and cover tightly with foil if the top starts to burn.

Step Twenty

Check that the fish is piping hot (I recommend using a food thermometer – it should be 63 degrees C) and cook for longer if necessary.

Top Tips

  • Use a food thermometer to make sure your fish is above 63 degrees C before serving.
  • If you haven’t got a thermometer, dig a little fish out of the middle and make sure it’s absolutely piping hot.
  • Your cooking time might not be the same as mine if your air fryer is a different size or the cooking dish you use is a different size. This is why a food thermometer is an excellent idea.
  • If it looks like the top will burn, wrap it in foil. But bear in mind, the air fryer blasts hot air about. So, while in the oven, you can loosely cover the top of your pan; in the air fryer, you have to scrunch the foil around tightly to stop it from blowing off and catching the element.

Serving Suggestions

Fish pie has it all. There’s fish, egg, sauce, mash and cheese. It’s filling, nutritious and tasty. It doesn’t need any extra sides to make it a filling family dinner.

If you did want to add any extras, I’d keep it simple with some bread and butter and some boiled or steamed veggies.

Variations

There are a few things that you could do differently.

Change the Fish

I use a fish pie mix with cod, smoked haddock and salmon, and a pack of prawns.

You can skip the prawns entirely and use different fish if you prefer.

Skip the Eggs

I love boiled eggs on a fish pie, but they aren’t essential.

Skip the Cheese

I love a fish pie with a cheese top. But it’s not essential, and you can leave the cheese off if you prefer!

You can also add extra cheese. This is what I’d do!

Leftovers

Leftover fish pie is great with extra veggies or bread and butter.

Can You Reheat Fish Pie with Egg?

You can reheat fish pie with egg. But it’s really important that both the fish and egg are absolutely piping hot before serving.

Only reheat once, and just double-check that it’s piping after reheating in either your microwave or air fryer.

I use a food thermometer or probe to ensure my fish is above 63 degrees C before serving.

Storage

Cool your leftovers quickly by removing them from the cooking pan and leaving them in a clean bowl or tub on the side.

Once cool (don’t leave it out for longer than two hours), cover it and place it in the fridge for 1-2 days.

Don’t reheat more than once.

Can You Freeze Fish Pie with Egg?

I’m a big fan of freezing leftovers.

But hard-boiled eggs don’t freeze particularly well, so I wouldn’t recommend freezing this air-fried fish pie.

FAQ

What Do You Eat with Fish Pie?

I eat fish pie with vegetables and sometimes bread and butter. But it’s already got potato, egg, fish and veggies so you could serve it on its own.

Can I Make Fish Pie and Cook It Later?

Yes, you could assemble your fish pie, leave it to cool, wrap the dish in cling film or cover, and place it in the fridge until you are ready to bake. I wouldn’t keep it for longer than a day or two, and always make sure the fish is piping hot when you serve it.

Do You Put Egg in Fish Pie?

I put egg in fish pie. I love the flavour and texture. You don’t have to, though.

Why is My Fish Pie Watery?

If your fish pie is watery, it may be because your mash was too runny. Make sure you drain your potatoes thoroughly and mash them a little thicker than you usually would.
If you’ve used frozen fish, there might also be excess water from the thawing. Make sure you drain it thoroughly before adding to your white sauce.

Is Fish Pie Healthy?

Yes, fish pie is very healthy and nutritious.
