Air Fryer Halloumi Fries

Craving air fryer halloumi fries? This quick and easy recipe delivers golden, crunchy perfection every time – perfect for a cheeky snack or alternative side!

I am obsessed with crispy halloumi fries. I love the salty flavour, golden brown colour and the combination of texture.

I’ll happily sit and eat a slice of grilled or pan fried halloumi how it is, but these crispy Halloumi cheese sticks are next level!

The perfect snack or appetiser, or a great addition to a meal, they are so easy to make in the air fryer, and once you get the knack of dipping them in breadcrumbs, you’ll be making them all of the time!

Why I Love Air Fryer Halloumi Fries

Air Fried Halloumi sticks are perfect because:

  • Halloumi cheese has a high melting point, which makes it ideal for air frying.
  • Halloumi bites are soft in the middle, crispy on the outside and absolutely delicious.
  • The finger shape makes them really easy to eat, and even more importantly, perfect for dipping!
  • They’re easy.
  • Halloumi. That’s all.

Ingredients For Crispy Halloumi Fries

There are some different things that you can do with your crispy halloumi fries in the air fryer,  which I’ll look at below. But for the basics, which is what I tend to stick to, I use:

Olive Oil – Other cooking oils are fine, too, but don’t use calorie-reduced cooking spray.

Halloumi Cheese

Plain Flour – you might know it as all purpose flour.

Egg

Golden Breadcrumbs – You can make them with Panko breadcrumbs. But I love the colour, texture, and slightly nutty flavour of golden. I use a tub from Paxo, which is handy to have in and easy to find.

Variations

Smoked Paprika, black pepper, garlic powder, onion powder and pretty much any other spices you like can be mixed in with the breadcrumbs to add extra flavour.

Experimenting is the best way to find out what you like.

I sometimes add black pepper, but never salt, and halloumi is already very salty.

You’ll Also Need

I use three bowls for the dipping, a sharp knife and chopping board to prepare the halloumi, and a silicone spatula to turn the fingers.

Then, you just need an air fryer with a crisper tray. A spritzer bottle for olive oil is useful, but you can just rub the tray if you don’t have it.

How to Air Fry Crispy Halloumi Fries – Step-by-Step Instructions

Full, easy-to-follow instructions and quantities are available in the recipe card at the bottom of this post.

Step One

Rub the tray of your air fryer basket with oil. Use a spray bottle if you have one.

I actually don’t always do this; nothing ever sticks to my air fryer.

Step Two

Place the flour in one bowl, the egg in another, and the breadcrumbs in another. I use cereal-size bowls. The halloumi fingers are small, so you don’t need anything wider.

Step Three

Dip the fingers one at a time, first in the flour. Make sure each side is well coated and knock off any excess by just tapping the halloumi on the side of the bowl.

Halloumi is dryer than chicken, so you might have to spend a little time making sure the flour sticks, but it only needs to be a very thin layer. If there’s too much flour, you’ll struggle to get the egg and then the breadcrumbs to stick and might end up with some naked halloumi.

Step Four

Next, dip in the egg, again make sure each side is coated. You might need to turn it a few times if there’s too much flour.

Step Five

Finally, dip in the breadcrumbs, coat each side and press in place if any areas refuse to stick.

Step Six

Place in the air fryer basket on the crisper tray.

Step Seven

Repeat until all of the fingers are in the tray.

Step Eight

Air fry at 200 degrees C for 8 minutes, carefully turning after 4.

Serving Suggestions

Honestly, I often serve my Air-fried halloumi with a pot of sweet chilli sauce. And when I say serve, I mean for myself. I love them so much!

You can also serve with other sauces and dips that you love as a snack or as an appetizer.

Air fryer Halloumi fingers are also yummy on a salad, in a wrap, or with fries and peas as an alternative to fish or chicken goujons.

Leftovers

Leftover halloumi, like leftover cake, is a myth.

If you do somehow have any leftovers, you can reheat them for a few minutes in the air fryer or microwave. Just to soften and warm the halloumi. I’d start at 180 degrees C for 5 minutes and see how you go.

Storage

Leftover halloumi fries can be kept in an airtight container in the fridge for a day or two.

Notes

I find it easier (and less messy) to use one hand for the flour and breadcrumbs and the other for the egg, or I end up with giant, sticky, golden breadcrumb fingers.
Add more breadcrumbs to your bowl if needed.
