How to Air Fry Cheese and Onion Toasties – Step-by-Step Instructions
Full, easy-to-follow instructions and quantities are available in the recipe card at the bottom of this post.
Step One
Preheat the air fryer to 200 degrees C and set it for 8 minutes. If your air fryer doesn’t have a preheat setting, just set it for 10 minutes and add the toastie once it’s been on for 2 minutes.
Step Two
Butter the bread liberally on both sides, spreading right to the edges.
Step Three
Sprinkle most of the grated cheese onto one slice of bread, leaving a handful to top.
Step Four
Evenly sprinkle on the red onion in a thin layer.

Step Five
Top with the other slice of bread.
Step Six
Carefully place it in the centre of the air fryer basket on top of the crisper tray. Spreading both sides with butter means you don’t need to oil the tray.

Step Seven
Air fry for 4 minutes.
Step Eight
Carefully flip over.
Step Nine
Sprinkle the rest of the cheese on top. The cheese would blow off on a cold sandwich, but because your sandwich is already warm, if you lightly press it down, it will start to melt and stick in place.

Step Ten
Return to the air fryer and air fry for 4-5 more minutes until the cheese is golden brown and how you like it.

Step Eleven
Carefully remove from the basket, cut in half and serve.

Serving Suggestions
You can really serve a cheese and onion toastie however you’d serve a sandwich. I tend to go for classic options like crisps, coleslaw, wedges, soup and salad.

Variations
Skip the Cheese Top
But it’s not necessary.
I love extra cheese on the top. Because who doesn’t love extra cheese?
You can skip it and use less cheese or put more cheese in the middle.

Use Different Bread
I’ve used regular white bread for this, but sometimes I make my toasties with seeded bread because that’s what we usually buy.
For an extra treat, sometimes I make toasties on thick tiger bread, which is absolutely delicious.
You can really use any sandwich bread.
Use Brown Onions
Brown/yellow onions are fine. I prefer red onions, so I use them in pretty much anything. But it’s up to you.
Use Different Cheese
I use mature cheddar in most of my toasties, but any cheese that melts, that you usually use for cheese on toast, works. I recommend a strong flavour so that it doesn’t get overwhelmed by the onions.

Definitely perfect comfort food! Thanks for your comment, and I hope you feel better soon!
This was fantastic but next time I’ll use less onion and maybe some cheddar. I put sliced edam and quite thick slices of onion and it was still lovely!
Thanks for sharing the recipe!
Thanks for your comment, I’m glad you enjoyed it. I prefer a nice mature cheddar on a toastie, but love edam on its own :)
