Ingredients For Hotdog Mac and Cheese
Hotdog macaroni cheese is fairly simple, and follows the same basic recipe as all of my Mac and cheese recipes. I use:
Butter
Garlic Puree – Swap for 2-3 cloves of fresh garlic if you prefer.
Plain Flour
Semi-Skimmed Milk – You can use whole milk if you prefer, but I don’t find it makes that much difference.
Mature Cheddar Cheese
Mozzarella
Smoked Paprika
Chilli Powder
Dijon Mustard – English mustard is fine too.
Salt and Freshly Ground Black Pepper
Hotdog Sausages – The pre-cooked kind you typically boil to warm up. I’ve put six, but you can use more if you want more. A whole pack is fine!
Macaroni Pasta

You’ll Also Need
Macaroni cheese with hotdogs doesn’t need much. I use:
- Sharp knife and chopping board to cut the sausages.
- Saucepan and colindar to prepare the pasta.
- I use the same pan for my sauce and add a whisk. I also use a spatula to stir through the pasta.
- An ovenproof dish to bake.
- You’ll also need a grater if your cheese isn’t pre-grated.
How to Make Hotdog Mac and Cheese – Step-by-Step Instructions
Full, easy-to-follow instructions and quantities are available in the recipe card at the bottom of this post.
Step One
Cook the macaroni according to the package instructions. This is usually boiling for about 5 minutes in salted water.
Step Two
Drain, rinse and set to one side. Rinsing just stops it from sticking together.
Step Three
Melt the butter and garlic in a large, flameproof pan over medium heat on the hob.

Step Four
Reduce the heat and add the flour.
Step Five
Whisk for 1-2 minutes until it becomes a smooth ball. It comes together fairly quickly.

Step Six
Slowly add the milk, whisking in a bit at a time to avoid lumps. I start with small splashes, but add more at a time once it’s thinner.

Step Seven
Increase the heat and simmer for 3 minutes, whisking constantly. You’ll be able to feel it thicken as you go.
Step Eight
Remove from the heat.
Step Nine
Preheat the oven to 180 degrees C (fan-assisted).
Step Ten
Whisk in the salt and pepper, dijon mustard, paprika and chilli.

Step Eleven
Fold in the slices of sausage.

Step Twelve
Fold in most of the cheeses, retaining a handful of each to top.

Step Thirteen
Stir in the pasta until it’s covered in cheese sauce. It’s quite thick and cheesy, so you might have to really dig down.

Step Fourteen
Carefully tip into a suitable ovenproof dish. Mine’s probably not really big enough, but all my others are far too big!

Step Fifteen
Top with the remaining cheese.

Step Sixteen
Bake for 20 minutes until the top is golden for a perfect hot dog mac and cheese!
How to Serve Hot Dog Mac and Cheese
What you serve with Mac and cheese with hotdogs depends on how you are serving it.
This recipe for hotdog Mac and cheese would serve 4 people as a main meal, perhaps with salad, garlic bread, or veggies on the side.
But it could also serve 6 as a side, perhaps with a steak, a burger, or a sandwich.

Variations
I mean, there are tons that you can do differently. Easy Mac and Cheese is like a super cheesy pasta bake, so you can add pretty much anything to it! But if you want a hotdog Mac and cheese recipe, there are two main changes that you can make.
Skip the Spice
I’ve added some chilli, paprika and mustard, so it’s a fairly spicy hotdog Mac and cheese. But you can change your seasonings, or just stick to salt and pepper and let the cheese do the talking.
Add Some Veggies
Mushrooms, broccoli, peas, corn, spinach, and cauliflower, are all excellent additions.
For veg that doesn’t need softening, like spinach, just stir it in with the sausages. If it needs cooking, boil or steam to an al dente texture before adding.
Add Bacon
Sausages and bacon are a lovely combination, so why not have both? Grill some bacon, chop it into chunks and throw it in with the hot dogs.

Leftovers
Leftovers can be reheated in a microwave in a microwave-safe tub (how long will depend on how much you’ve got left. Go a minute at a time) or in the oven at 180 degrees C in an ovenproof dish until it’s bubbling. This might take about 10 minutes.
If you are worried about the top browning in the oven, cover lightly with foil. Don’t do that in the microwave!!
Storage
Place your leftover hotdog Mac and cheese in a clean tub or bowl and keep covered in the fridge for up to 3 days. I don’t recommend freezing.

FAQ
I add them between the cheese and pasta, just before baking.
So this recipe is adding hot dogs to Mac and cheese, but you can do it the other way too, make a standard Mac and cheese and pile it on top of your hotdog for tasty Mac and cheese hotdogs.
No precooked hotdogs just need warming up, that will happen as your Mac and chees bakes.
