Ingredients For Hotdog Spaghetti
Hotdogs with spaghetti is so simple. You don’t need any fancy ingredients. I use:
Butter
Red Onion
Garlic Puree – use 2 cloves of fresh garlic if you prefer.
Bell Pepper – any colour is fine.
Cooked Hotdog Sausages – When I say cooked, I mean the kind that you buy cooked and just have to boil. I don’t mean you need to cook them first.
Chopped Tomatoes
Tomato Puree
Mixed Herbs
Smoked Paprika
Salt and Pepper
Spaghetti
You’ll Also Need
I cook my Hotdog and tomato spaghetti in a large cast iron Dutch oven, but a large frying pan would be fine too. Any non-stick, flameproof pan or dish is great.
I also use a large saucepan and a colander for my spaghetti, and a chopping board, sharp knife and spatula.
How to Make Hotdog Spaghetti – Step-by-Step Instructions
Full, easy-to-follow instructions and quantities are available in the recipe card at the bottom of this post.
Step One
Melt the butter in a large, flameproof, non-stick pan or dish over medium heat on the hob.
Step Two
Add the red onion and fry for 5 minutes, stirring often.
Step Three
Stir in the garlic puree and peppers.
Step Four
Cook for 3 minutes, stirring often.
Step Five
Stir in the hotdog sausages.
Step Six
Pour in the chopped tomatoes and add the tomato puree, herbs, paprika and salt and pepper.
Step Seven
Stir well.
Step Eight
Bring to a simmer and cook for 10 minutes, reducing the heat if necessary and stirring occasionally until the sauce has thickened. Make sure you scrape the bottom of the pan.
If at any point it’s getting too thick, either stir in some of the pasta water or remove it from the heat straight away.
Step Nine
Drain the cooked pasta and stir through the sauce. Another option is to serve the hotdogs and sauce on a bed of spaghetti.
Serving Suggestions
I serve my Hot dog spaghetti just as it is, straight from the pan.
If you want to add extras, a simple green salad, some garlic bread, or a sprinkle of parmesan cheese would work, but you certainly don’t need to add any big side dishes, Hotdogs with spaghetti has everything that it needs.
Variations
There are a few things that you could do differently, or add to this Hot dogs and spaghetti recipe.
Add Cream
My Spaghetti with hotdogs is very tomatey. It’s a tangy flavour, with a hint of smokiness from the hotdogs and the paprika.
If you prefer a creamier pasta dinner, you could add a splash of double or single cream to your Quick spaghetti with hotdog sauce.
Add either just before serving or while your sauce simmers.
Add Soft Cheese
Another option is adding a tablespoon or two of soft cheese.
I recommend full-fat, as low-fat is more likely to split.
Add Some Spice
This is a Hotdog spaghetti for kids, so while there’s a little paprika, it’s not spicy.
If you prefer a spicier dinner, add more paprika, some chilli powder, or a little cayenne pepper.
Add Other Veggies
I’ve just added some onion and pepper, for a super simple family dinner.
You could add more peppers, diced courgette, mushrooms, fresh tomatoes, spring onions or any other veggies that you usually have with pasta.
Add Stock or Pasta Water
My sauce is quick, thick and rich. If you want a thinner sauce or more sauce, add some veg stock, or just a ladle of pasta water.
Leftovers
Reheat leftovers in the microwave or on the hob, adding a splash of water if needed.
Make sure the meat is piping hot before serving.
Storage
Remove any leftovers from the cooking dish and place them in a clean tub or bowl. Store in the fridge for 1-2 days.
