Homemade burgers are easy, cheap, and tasty. The perfect family dinner. These easy homemade burger buns are the perfect addition!
Most burger buns today, whether homemade, store-bought or from a restaurant seem to be brioche. Or at least a sweeter, milkier dough that’s closer to brioche than it is regular white bread.
I’ll be honest, while I don’t hate a brioche burger bun (and generally love brioche!) I don’t always want sweeter bread with my meat!
I generally prefer a good, classic white bread bun for my burgers. Whether it’s an easy beef burger (get my go-to recipe below!) a halloumi and mushroom burger or a classic beanie burger, white bread always tastes great, and is super easy to make at home!

Making Homemade Bread
I love making bread.
While we still buy loaves (usually tiger or seeded for anyone interested!) I always make my own pizza bases, will make a crusty loaf if we’re having a stew or casserole, and I love to make burger buns.
They are easy and cheap, and I really just love the smell and taste of freshly made bread.
We have got a bread machine, which I do use sometimes (you can typically even use it to knead and prove your dough for buns and bases, even if you need to shape by hand and bake in the oven), but I really love to hand knead too.

It’s so satisfying, and the kids love to help.
If you’ve never tried making bread at home, I really recommend it.
Burger buns are actually one of the first things I ever made, and I’ve been using this recipe for years.
It makes 8 fairly standard-size buns, but you could use the same recipe (with a longer bake) to make 4 or 6 bigger buns, or even (with a shorter bake) to make mini burger buns, which are outrageously cute!

My Easy Beef Burger Recipe
If you are making these homemade hamburger buns, you might also want my super easy beef burger recipe. I use:
500g Beef Mince
1 Small Onion – Very finely diced.
1 Tablespoon Horseradish
I use my hands to squeeze this all together, and then use a burger-shaped lid I saved once (burger presses are obviously fine, too) lined with clingfilm to press into four patties before wrapping and chilling in the fridge for an hour.
Fry for about 5 minutes on each side in a little cooking spray until cooked through and top with cheese and anything else that you like. Super easy, no egg, and totally delicious!

Ingredients for Easy Burger Buns
For my easy homemade burger buns recipe, I use:
Strong White Bread Flour
Salt
White Sugar
7g Sachet of Fast Action Yeast (usually labelled something like “easy bake” or “instant yeast” in shops)
Cooking Oil – Olive oil, vegetable oil, or sunflower oil are all okay.
Warm Water
Can You Add Sesame Seeds?
Yes. You can brush your buns with a little whole milk and scatter on sesame seeds before baking if you want to.
Can You Add Wholemeal Flour?
I’d start with white flour before experimenting with other additions. I also recommend trying half and half before going full wholewheat.

How to Make Homemade Burger Buns
Making burger buns, or any bread, can seem time-consuming, but actually, most of this is the bread rising. The active time is very low, and the recipe is super easy. You can also get these instructions and the full quantities in the recipe card at the bottom of this post.
Step One
Mix the flour and salt in a large mixing bowl. I use a wooden spoon, but you can use your stand mixer with a paddle attachment if you’ve got one.
Step Two
Add the sugar and yeast and mix well.
Step Three
Make a well in the centre of the mixture.
Step Four
Pour in the warm water and oil.
Step Five
Mix with a wooden spoon, taking care to scrape around the sides and bottom until it forms a rough dough.
Step Six
Tip out onto a well-floured surface and knead for 10 minutes, adding more flour, if necessary, until it forms a smooth ball.

Step Seven
Lightly oil the mixing bowl, place the ball of dough in it and cover loosely with a clean tea towel.
Step Eight
Leave to rise for 1 hour, at room temperature, until the dough has roughly doubled in size.

Step Nine
Tip onto a floured work surface and roll into a long sausage.

Step Ten
Cut into 8 equal (ish, I’m bad at this part!) slices, and roll into balls.
Press down slightly, to form a burger bun-type shape, but don’t flatten.

Step Eleven
Place on two lightly floured baking trays, cover loosely and leave for 45 minutes.

I actually put them into two large, clean plastic carrier bags. I find that they are big enough to give the bread room to rise and create a warm environment.
The bright orange Sainsbury’s ones are my favourite for bread, and I’ve kept two just for this.
Step Twelve
Bake at 180 degrees C (fan-assisted) for 25 minutes until golden brown.

Step Thirteen
Remove from the oven and leave to cool fully before slicing.
Ways to Use Soft White Burger Buns
You can use these buns for burgers of any kind, but also for sandwiches.

If you’ve got any bread rolls left, they are great for toasting and spreading with butter and jam for breakfast the next morning or dipping in soup at lunchtime. Just make sure they are stored in an airtight container in a dry place out of direct sunlight.

Hi Donna
I’ve just made these and just taken them from the oven. They look perfect, amazing even! They’re still hot so not sliced them yet but if they taste as good as they look they will be delicious. I wish I could send a photo but I’m not on Insta so have no way of uploading it.
Thanks Rosie, I’m sure they looked great! I hope they tasted as nice, and you had a lovely dinner. :)
