Chocolate Orange is such a fab flavour combination that works so well with buttery shortbread. These Chocolate Orange Shortbread cookies have it all!
I’d never made shortbread until fairly recently. I didn’t really like it, so I’d never thought about it.
Then, I made lemon shortbread, and it was soooo good.
Now I’m making it all the time, experimenting the different flavours, shapes, and sizes. I’m thinking of a shortbread selection box for everyone for Christmas!
This is a chocolate chip shortbread with orange, and it’s absolutely gorgeous.

The orange flavour isn’t too strong, but you can add extra if you like more of a sweet orange flavour.

Ingredients for Chocolate Orange Shortbread
For this delicious orange chocolate shortbread, I use:
Caster Sugar
Unsalted Butter – I don’t recommend margarine.
Plain Flour

Orange
Chocolate Orange – Dark chocolate with a little orange extract is fine too.
That’s it!

How to Make Chocolate Orange Shortbread – Step-by-Step
What I love most about choc orange shortbread or any shortbread, is that it’s really simple. Once you’ve got a basic shortbread recipe that you like, and that works every time, you can start adding other flavours and textures.

This is an easy chocolate orange shortbread cookie recipe. You can get the full instructions and quantities in the recipe card at the bottom of the post too.
Step One
Take the butter out of the fridge for about an hour before you need it, so that it’s at room temperature and easy to work with.
Step Two
Pour the caster sugar into a large mixing bowl and grate in the orange zest. Mix thoroughly.
Step Three
Mix in the butter until smooth. You can do this with an electric whisk, a hand whisk or a wooden spoon.
I use an electric hand whisk.
Step Four
Add the chocolate chips and mix in.
Step Five
Tip in the flour and mix until it’s starting to come together into breadcrumbs.
Step Six
Use your hands to squeeze it all together into a ball.
Because it’s quite a large amount of dough, I kinda make a few balls and then press them all together.

Step Seven
Pop in the fridge for at least 30 minutes.
Step Eight
Preheat the oven to 180 degrees C (fan-assisted) and line 2 large baking sheets with baking paper.
Step Nine
Roll the dough out on a lightly floured work surface, until it’s around 5mm thick.

Step Ten
Press into large rounds using a cookie cutter.
You can make different shapes if you prefer. You can also make them thicker or thinner but adjust the bake time accordingly.
I make big chocolate orange shortbread biscuits and this recipe makes around 12.

Step Eleven
Place carefully on the baking trays.
They spread a tiny tiny bit, so don’t put them right next to each other, but they don’t need lots of space.
Step Twelve
Bake for around 15 minutes, until they are golden brown.
Step Thirteen
Remove from the trays and leave to cool fully on a wire rack.

Step Fourteen – Decorating Chocolate Orange Shortbread Cookies
You can leave them as they are, but I love to add a really rough drizzle of orange chocolate.
You can either melt down some orange chocolate (I prefer dark) or melt some dark chocolate and add a little orange extract. Or just use chocolate without the orange.

I melt in a little pan, but you can also do it in the microwave, or use a double boiler-type set up.
Then I use a piping bag to roughly drizzle the melted chocolate over the cool cookies and leave them to set.
