Cajun Halloumi Burgers

*Hello Fresh have paid me to recreate one of their yummy recipes and write this post. All opinions are my own, and the burger is genuinely yummy. Because HALLOUMI!*

Halloumi is always wonderful, but for me it was the tangy garlic sauce that really made these Cajun Halloumi Burgers extra special. Served with thick, skin-on sweet potato wedges for a filling family meal. Perfect for summer nights at home.

When Hello Fresh got in touch asking me if I’d like to recreate one of their recipes to share with you are, I’m going to be honest, I had my eyes open for a halloumi recipe on the list of options.

I adore halloumi. Actually, I love cheese generally, but it’s so different. I love the flavour and texture and if I’m being honest I could probably just fry it up and eat it on its own quite happily (even better with a sweet chilli dip!)

But, sometimes you want more than a giant chunk of halloumi. And I never quite know what to do with it.

I eat it in salads, or kinda, on things, but then I’m a bit lost, and husbands not as keen, so I was eager to find a recipe that we could both enjoy (Michael doesn’t like cheese, so not a family meal in our house).

These Cajun Halloumi Burgers were a definite win. Husband actually enjoyed them far more than I’d expected him to. Cajun is one of his favourite flavours, he tried to smuggle cajun spice into almost everything, so that certainly helped.

For me, the garlic sauce really made this meal. It’s such a nice flavour and a great change from the usual mayo I tend to add to my burgers.

The Hello Fresh recipe wanted me to add a little garlic at a time, but I threw it all in. I like my garlic strong! By all means though just add a little if you prefer a milder flavour.

I also added extra Cajun, but again, personal preference.

Can You Make Changes?

Absolutely. Hello Fresh give you the recipe and everything that you need, and you certainly don’t have to make any changes. But, once your box is in your house, you can do whatever you want with it!

As I mentioned, I added some extra Cajun, and went the whole hog with the garlic, but you don’t have to.

I’d also be tempted to add some mushrooms, because mushroom and halloumi burgers are a classic, and mushrooms and garlic always work really well together.

By all means, experiment with anything you’ve got in, but you certainly don’t have to. Hello Fresh provide everything that you need to create a yummy dinner easily.

What to Serve with Halloumi Burgers?

wedges being tossed in oil

The Hello Fresh recipe I used served these Cajun Halloumi Burgers with chunky sweet potato chips (you get the sweet potato in your box). Which is exactly what I’d have served them with.

I love sweet potatoes. They are really good for you, taste great and make a fantastic alternative to regular chips. The kids call them orange chips.

These particular sweet potato ships are skin on, which is a bit special. You get an extra bit of crisp which I love.

I used an absolutely massive sweet potato, so my chips are huge, and massively uneven. They were still cooked within 30 minutes. Just remember to adjust the cooking time if yours are significantly chunkier, or thinner.

Cooking Halloumi

Recipes with halloumi are fab! Halloumi is so easy to cook. You can grill or fry it in a few minutes.

The Halloumi in this recipe is rubbed with a Cajun infused oil, so you can just add it straight to a hot pan and fry for around 2 minutes on each side.

Halloumi is a fantastic alternative to meat, and perfect for any meat-free Monday meals, or just when you want a change. It’s one of my absolute favourites and I’m really pleased to have found a Halloumi recipe that husband loves as much as I do.

Description

A creamy garlic sauce makes these cajun halloumi burgers extra special. Served with sweet potato chips for a gorgeous dinner.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 Vine Tomato
  • 1 Garlic Clove
  • 1 large Sweet Potato
  • 1 Tablespoon Olive oil
  • 1 Teaspoon Cajun Spice
  • 1 block Halloumi
  • 3 Tablespoon Sour Cream
  • 2 Brioche Buns
  • 1 Baby Gem Lettuce
  • Salt and Pepper

Instructions

  1. Pre-heat the oven to 200 degrees.
  2. Slice the tomato.
  3. Peel and finely chop the garlic and sprinkle with a little salt. Use the flat of your knife to crush into a paste by repeatedly pressing down on the garlic and dragging.
  4. Wash (but don’t peel) the sweet potato and chop into chunky wedges.
  5. Toss the wedges in 1 tbsp of olive oil and a pinch of salt and pepper. Cook on the top shelf of the oven for around 20-25 mins.
  6. Mix the Cajun spice with 1 tablespoon of olive oil.
  7. Cut the halloumi into slices just under 1cm thick.
  8. Rub the Cajun infused oil over the halloumi.
  9. Mix the sour cream with a bit of the garlic paste and a small pinch of salt and pepper. Give it a taste and add more garlic paste until it tastes just right.
  10. When the sweet potatoes are 5 mins away from cooked, heat a non-stick pan on medium-high heat. Once the pan is hot gently lay in the halloumi and cook for 2 mins on each side, turning only once.
  11. Cut the buns in half and put them in the oven for 2 mins to crisp them up.
  12. Slice the lettuce.
  13. Serve the halloumi inside the buns with the lettuce, tomato slices, a dollop of garlic sauce and the sweet potato wedges on the side.

  1. A creative take on the burger, this looks delicious. I’ve never cooked with halloumi, will start with this recipe. I love the step by step pictures too.
