Air Fryer Halloumi

Air Fryer Halloumi Cheese is golden brown, crispy and delicious. It’s super quick and easy and perfect for a variety of meals, snacks and sides.

For so long, I rebelled against the air fryer trend, convinced that it would be one of those fads that pass quickly, leaving you with yet another machine in the toastie cupboard.

Then, the wonderful Daisies and Pie convinced me (with plenty of help from my other air frying friends) that an air fryer would actually replace all those other machines. And I was in Costco, and there was a really good deal, so I gave in.

Of course, one of the first things I air-fried was one of my absolute favourites: halloumi cheese.

I’m pretty obsessed with it now, though, so you can expect lots of air fryer recipes in the future.

Why Air Fry Halloumi Cheese

  • No more over-cooking Halloumi and having to peel it off the frying pan!
  • It’s quick and easy. I’m not even really sure I can call it an air fryer halloumi recipe.
  • It’s really easy to get that lovely crisp texture and golden-brown colour that can be harder to achieve under the grill.
  • A much healthier and easier option than frying halloumi
  • Air fried halloumi on a wrap is the perfect easy lunch.

Ingredients For Air Fryer Halloumi

All that you need to air fry halloumi is:

One Block Halloumi Cheese

Olive Oil – Other oils are fine, too.

Thyme – I like Thyme for a nice Mediterranean flavour, but it’s not essential.

I don’t recommend adding salt, as halloumi is very salty, but you could add a little freshly ground black pepper.

Equipment

So, to air fry halloumi, you need an air fryer.

Honestly, mine was £41 from Costco. The basket is big enough for cakes and even full meals like pasta bake, and it’s a fab place to start if you are tempted.

Then you need a small bowl and pastry brush, as well as a knife to chop your halloumi.

You’ll also need a clean towel or some kitchen roll to dry the halloumi and silicone tongs to turn it.

How to Cook Halloumi in an Air Fryer – Step-by-Step Instructions

Step One

Slice the halloumi into 8.

Step Two

Use a clean tea towel, cloth or piece of kitchen roll to dab the halloumi dry.

Step Three

If necessary, insert the crisper tray into the air fryer and preheat to 200 degrees C.

Step Four

Brush the halloumi with a little oil on each side and sprinkle on the Thyme.

Step Five

Carefully place in the air fryer basket and cook for around 8 minutes, carefully flipping halfway through.

Top Tips

It’s so simple there aren’t many.

  • If your air fryer has a crisper tray, use it instead of just placing it at the bottom of the basket. This helps the air to circulate.
  • Dab the halloumi well, or it leaks a lot of water into your fryer. It won’t harm the halloumi, but it’s a mess!
  • If this is your first-time air-frying halloumi, check after a few minutes. It took me a few goes to get my time and temperature right. How long to cook halloumi in the air fryer depends on how crispy you like it, and your specific equipment.

Variations

The only variation to this crispy air fried halloumi really is in the flavours you add.

Thyme is great, but some Cajun or Peri Peri seasoning would be lovely if you fancy spicier halloumi. Only ever add a sprinkle, but experiment with different flavours.

Of course, you don’t have to add anything at all. You could just brush with oil and air fry.

Ways to Use Halloumi Made in the Air Fryer

There is so much that you can do with air-fried halloumi cheese! Some of my favourites include:

Storage

To store, place your halloumi on a clean plate or in a tub, let it cool before covering it and put it in the fridge, where it will be fine for a few days.

Alternatively, only air fry the slices you need, and keep the rest of the uncooked block wrapped in the fridge.

Leftovers

If you have leftover cooked halloumi, reheat it in the microwave or for a few minutes at a low temperature in your air fryer. Don’t heat for too long, or it will be too crispy to eat.
