Greek Chicken Wraps

A gorgeous summery mid-week dinner, these Greek Chicken Wraps are tasty, refreshing and they bring back lovely memories of summer holidays and eating in fabulous Greek Restaurants.

I adore Greek food. Oh, let’s face it, I adore all of the food!

I’ve only been to Greece (Islands of) twice, but both times I’ve just absolutely loved all of the food.

Except for actually the staple of most Greek meals, the salad. Don’t get me wrong, I love a good salad. But I don’t like Olives and Feta cheese.

We had a great Greek takeaway near our old house which sold brilliant Greek wraps with Gyros or Souvlaki, as well as trays of gorgeous meat and cheese and big main meals.

Unfortunately, they don’t deliver to our new house.

The good news is, I can make my own! These Greek Chicken Wraps are awesome.

The marinaded chicken just tastes like summer, and the flatbreads and Tzatziki are super easy to make and work with lots of different meals.

You can find my Tzakziki recipe here, and the flatbreads here, and if you fancy a different Greek Treat, my lamb wraps (yeah, it’s the same with lamb!!) or lamb kleftiko are always yummy.

What is the Difference Between Gyros and Souvlaki?

Gyros is from the Greek word gyro, which means turn or rotation, referring to the way in which the meat is cooked.

Greek gyros is cooked on a big turning rotisserie, like our kebabs. It’s usually chicken, beef or lamb, which is sliced off and served in a pita or flatbread with salad and tzatziki.

Souvlaki, is chunks of meat cooked and served on a skewer, served with bread and salad, not necessarily as a sandwich. Both are gorgeous!

Which One is This?

Neither? Let’s be honest here, my meat is neither cooked on a skewer or a big rotisserie. These are Greek Chicken Wraps because they have a gorgeous Mediterranean flavour.

But they aren’t exactly authentic, and I wouldn’t call them either Gyros or Souvlaki.

The way I serve my Greek Chicken Wraps means that they are closer to a Gyros though.

Are Greek Chicken Wraps Healthy?

Chicken wrap on plate, bowl of salad, bowl of tzatziki and bowl of chicken surround.

These wraps themselves aren’t unhealthy. You can use low fat, or even fat-free Greek yoghurt if you want to make them lower fat, and I cook my chicken in a cooking spray, instead of pouring in glugs of oil.

We tend to serve ours with chips, but if you wanted a healthier meal, you could serve yours with a big Greek salad.

How Do You Wrap a Greek Gyros?

…Badly? I’m honestly terrible at wrapping things.

For many years, I worked at a well-known chicken restaurant. When wraps were introduced to the menu, some of us went on a menu launch day to learn how to make all of the new products.

I was quite good at it then, not sure what happened!

I made my flatbreads with self-raising flour. So they aren’t exactly “flat”. They are quite fluffy.

This means that they taste fab, but that they are really hard to wrap! I use a bit of foil, or a cocktail stick to hold them together if I’m serving other people. For our family, we just do our best and get a little messy!

Fold the bottom up a tiny bit, to hold everything in, and then wrap, leaving the top open. You can hold it together with foil, paper, a cocktail stick, or anything else, but don’t be scared to just get stuck in!

Can You Buy Tzatziki?

Tzatziki in bowl with spoon

Yes! I make my own because you are buying Greek Yoghurt to make the flatbreads and only need a little to marinade the chicken, so whatever is left is perfect for tzatziki.

But, you can buy it in a little pot from most popular supermarkets. It will be with the hummus and other dips.

Does Tzatziki Freeze Well?

Totally. If you’ve got any tzatziki left, it will keep in a sealed tub in the fridge for a few days, or it freezes quite nicely.

If left to sit in the fridge, or frozen, it will separate slightly. Just give it a good stir and it should all come together.

Can You Make Flatbreads with Different Flour?

No yeast, no bread flour, and no need to prove. These flatbreads are super simple, ready in less than an hour, and gorgeously light and fluffy. Perfect for wraps or to dunk in all of your favourite dips.

I love these nice puffy flatbreads. But, during the great flour shortage of 2020, I was forced to make them with plain flour.

They were…flatter. Which is absolutely fine. Probably more authentic on the whole flatbread front.

I haven’t tried them with different flours, but I can imagine they would work well. Super simple recipes like this tend to convert really well.

Could You Eat Greek Chicken with Other Bread?

In Greece, you’d quite often eat meat like this stuffed into a pita bread.

You could basically eat it with pretty much anything, including store brought wraps, flatbreads and pita.

Using Up Greek Chicken Leftovers

If you’ve got any chicken left from your Greek Chicken Wraps, I recommend throwing it on a salad for lunch the day after.

Or eating it in another flatbread if you’ve got any left.

The Greek Chicken will stay nice and fresh in a sealed tub in the fridge for 2-3 days.

You can then eat it cold, or reheat in the oven, sprinkled with a little water, a pan with a little oil or the microwave. Just make sure the chicken is piping hot all of the way through before serving.

Note! This recipe is just for the chicken marinade. You can find my tzatziki here and my flatbreads here. The video below includes them all.
