Spring Chicks Toilet Roll Tube Craft

I am absolutely, completely and utterly, loving the Spring vibe. Admittedly, as I write this, we’ve had 2 rainy days, and lots of horrible wind. But, before then, it was Springy. I’ve been out in just a light jacket. And, I have this morning, put my boots in the cupboard. Which may well be wishful thinking. But wishing I am! Obviously, my Spring mood, had to come into our weekly toilet roll craft again. So, we have Spring chicks. Which are super cute!

I’m starting to get more and more amazed by how much you can do with a simple toilet roll tube. I’m sure there will be a time where I run out of ideas. But, when that day comes, I think we’ll just make more Star Wars characters. Or a lightsaber. But, for now, for your Spring chicks,

You will need:

  • Toilet roll tubes
  • Googly eyes
  • Masking tape
  • Glue
  • Yellow and orange paint
  • Card
  • Feathers

If you don’t have feathers, you could draw some on card, paint and cut them out. Same with googly eyes.

Firstly, you need to paint your tubes yellow. With light colours like this, I like to give them two coats. This also means you get chance for lots of cups of tea while they dry. To be completely honest, I often forget them for a few hours.

While they are drying, cut out some feet, triangles for their beaks and wings if you need to. Paint these orange and leave them to dry.

Now, I experienced some confusion. I spent quite a long time wondering why I was painting their feet orange. I suspect chicks have brown feet. So, feel free to do them brown for a more anatomically correct chicken. Then, I wondered how to do the chicks mouth? Do chicks have mouths? Eventually, I realised the beak was their mouth. Which led me to “do chicks have noses??” I’ve gone with no. But, if anyone has any light to shed, please do leave a comment.

Glue on the eyes, and beaks. I found superglue was needed to fix the wings in place. But PVA probably works if you’re patient enough to hold them in place for a while. I’m not.

I use masking tape to attach the feet. By just folding a bit up inside the tube and taping it on.

There you have it, Spring chicks.

I’m starting to wonder what to do with all these toilet roll crafts. We don’t keep them all forever, The Boy plays with them, so they don’t normally last too long. Our favourites live on a shelf. But, for some reason the Spring chicks and Easter Bunnies have found a home in the corner of our kitchen. Like a little Easter area, It’s very cute!
