Pumpkin Carving: The Horror

It’s awful! Sticky, messy, a bit gross, and a lot harder than the internet would have you believe. The Boy announced he was too tired after approximately 12 seconds and left me in a mound of pumpkin innards. A truly unpleasant experience.

What you will need:pumpkin making tools

  • A Pumpkin
  • A bin or large bag nearby
  • A very large knife
  • A craft knife
  • A massive serrated knife
  • A spoon
  • An incredibly strong arm
  • Patients of a saint!

It is worth noting, until today I had never even picked up a pumpkin (a lot lighter than I’d imagined!) and had absolutely no idea what I was doing. You see them looking lovely and intricate all the time, online guides all say its “easy”… indeed!

Firstly, I washed it. This seemed a good start! I then drew a big face on it with a marker pen. Then I cut the top off with a big knife. This was my first clue that it wasn’t going to be easy, I cut quite close to the top, so I’d have more space to design my masterpiece. It was really really hard!

I was then greeted by this disgusting mess of stringy bits and seeds, all wet and sticky, the spoon didn’t really work, so I had to get my hands in. I don’t mind mess, but I’ve got a bit of a thing about touching slimy things, it was awful!

I then had this lovely idea about creating some detail, and quite a funky mouth, using a sharp craft knife. It turned out the craft knife wasn’t long enough to fit through the pumpkin, so I tried to use a big knife to scrape more out of the middle, to an extent this worked, but it was taking a really long time. So instead I decided to sacrifice detail and delicacy (as I so often do) and hacked at it with a steak knife!

This was what we were left with!
